What a Mess

Oil to Keep Spewing Until August?

That’s right—we still haven’t seen the worst-case scenario for the oil leak devastating the Gulf of Mexico. On Sunday, Carol Browner, President Obama’s adviser for environment and energy warned that oil could continue spewing until as late as August, when relief wells will finally be in place: “We will be prepared for the worst," she said on CBS' Face the Nation. Browner also noted that BP’s next strategy to plug the leak—another containment cap—may actually makes things worse, increasing oil flow by almost 20 percent, as installing it involves cutting an important pipe that may be holding some oil back. Meanwhile, on ABC's This Week, BP managing director Robert Dudley expressed hope that the containment cap will fare better than the "top kill" method. The "engineering on this is more simple," he said.
