A NEW DAY

Obama Commutes 214 Sentences

President Obama on Wednesday commuted the sentences of 214 federal prisoners, marking the most sentence commutations in a single day in more than 100 years. Of the 67 prisoners serving life sentences, almost all were serving time for non-violent drug offenses. The move also means that Obama has shortened more prison sentences—562 in total—than the past nine presidents combined. He is expected to continue granting clemency throughout his remaining five months in office.
