Obama Arrives in South Africa

Air Force One touched down in South Africa today, the second stop on Obama's tour of the continent, just one hour away from the Pretoria hospital where Nelson Mandela remains in critical condition. The president gave no indication of whether he would personally visit the ailing former leader, but told reporters on the flight that he didn't want to be obtrusive. “I don’t need a photo-op,” he said. “So when we get there we’ll gauge the situation, but I think the main message we’ll want to deliver if not directly to him but to his family is simply our profound gratitude for his leadership all these years and that the thoughts and prayers of the American people are with him, and his family, and his country.”
