The largest school system in America will recognize two Muslim holidays beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year. New York City schools will put Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha on the official calendar by September, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chancellor Carmen Fariña said Wednesday. As a result, schools will be closed on Sept. 24 for Eid al-Adha. “This is a common-sense change and one that recognizes our growing Muslim community and honors its contributions to our city,” de Blasio said. Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Jersey all close their public schools on Muslim holidays.
