The family of Eric Garner received a $5.9 million settlement from New York City on Monday, according to the family lawyer. Garner was killed by police while selling cigarettes on a Staten Island street last summer. This agreement came just a few days before a deadline the family set before filing a civil-rights lawsuit. In December, a grand jury declined to indict the officer involved in Garner’s death, and the family filed a notice of claim that sought $75 million in damages last year. There are pending investigations into his death by a number of agencies and officials.
