Police shot and wounded a 69-year-old man who attempted to rob a Chase bank near Penn Station—one of the busiest sections of New York City—around noon on Thursday in Manhattan. John Daniel Stolarz, who was released from federal prison in New Jersey on Wednesday, reportedly walked into the Chase branch at 34th Street and 7th Avenue and demanded money. That particular branch does not make money exchanges, and Stolarz allegedly brandished a knife when they informed him there was no money for him. When he reportedly tried to flee, Stolarz was cornered by police at 31st Street and 8th Avenue—a mere four blocks from the scene. According to police, Stolarz was shot when he refused to drop his knife. Stolarz was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan and is expected to survive.
