North Korea Says Latest Missile Test Aimed at Carrying Nuclear Warhead

North Korea says a missile it tested over the weekend was capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The medium-long-range strategic missile, which reportedly landed about 60 miles from the coast of eastern Russia, was “capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead,” according to Pyongyang’s state-run Korean Central News Agency. Japanese officials said the missile flew at an unusually high altitude of about 1,240 miles, indicating it was a different kind of missile than those previously used. The United Nations Security Council is due to hold an emergency meeting Tuesday about the latest test launch, at the request of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. The White House issued a statement late Sunday saying the test launch should “serve as a call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions against North Korea.”
