Nigerian soldiers have rescued 71 people—mostly women and girls—from Boko Haram, the military said Thursday. The victims, almost all women and girls, were rescued in firefights in villages near the city of Maiduguri. Some said they had been held captive for almost a year. “I was waiting for death…they often threatened to kill us,” a woman named Yagana Kyari told the Associated Press. The military also said that “many” of the terrorists had been killed in the firefights.
