Most Syrian Refugees Still in the Region

Even as hundreds of thousands of refugees, many of them from Syria, stream through Europe’s borders, The New York Times reports that most of them remain in the Middle East. As many as 1.9 million refugees are in Turkey, 1.2 million in Lebanon, and 630,000 in Jordanian refugee camps. The Times reports that while many of them once intended to return to Syria, they increasingly see their home as lost. Before the civil war began in 2011, Syria had a population of 22 million.
