More Than a Dozen Killed as Train Derails in India

A train derailment in northern India on Saturday left at least 23 people dead and another 64 injured, Agence France-Presse reported on Twitter. Authorities had initially put the death toll at 10. Two carriages of an express train slammed into each other after the train flew off the tracks near Muzaffarnagar, about 80 miles from New Delhi. Some of the derailed carriages reportedly struck nearby houses in the collision, the fourth major train incident in the country this year. “We are struggling to pull out injured, and are waiting for gas cutters to arrive. It's too dark to launch a full fledged search operation, but our teams are trying their best,” Ajay Pandey, a senior police officer, was cited as saying about the frantic rescue operation.
