Minnesota Gov't Shuts Down

Even the folks in D.C. avoided this bullet: The government of Minnesota shut down at midnight on Friday after Democratic Governor Mark Dayton and Republican lawmakers failed to reach a budget compromise. In order to close the $5 billion deficit, Dayton hoped to raise taxes on the state’s highest earners—a measure that the Republican legislature would not allow. Only Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee have had government shutdowns in the past decade.
