Military Drafting Plan to Pull Only a ‘Few Thousand’ Troops From Afghanistan: Report
The U.S. military is drafting plans to pull only a few thousand troops out of Afghanistan after advisers convinced President Trump a smaller withdrawal would be the best option, The Washington Post reports. Late last year, Trump ordered the Pentagon to prepare for the withdrawal of up to 7,000 troops—or half of the number currently deployed there. After military advisers spoke to Trump, sources told the newspaper “far fewer than 7,000” will be pulled out of Afghanistan based on current discussions. However, the president has yet to reach a final decision on the matter. Trump still wants to eventually see a full withdrawal from the country and could order such a withdrawal at any point, according to the report.
