Miami Cop Union Calls a Beyonce Boycott

The Miami police union is refusing to work off-duty at Beyoncé’s concert in April because of her Super Bowl performance and a music video they say pays homage to the Black Panthers. Fraternal Order of Police President Javier Ortiz accused the superstar of using this year’s game “to divide Americans by promoting the Black Panthers,” and says “her anti-police message shows how she does not support law enforcement.” Miami police usually patrol the streets and façade outside the Little Havana stadium. Despite the union’s statement, a Miami-Dade Police Department spokesman said: “Right now the union president has his First Amendment right to say whatever he wants to say, but that doesn’t always translate to reality. As far as we see, there’s no indication that anything that is said there will translate into police officers not working the job.”
