Mexican Ex-Con Says He Killed American by Accident
The man accused of fatally shooting a 32-year-old woman at San Francisco's popular Pier 14 admitted he did it in a Sunday interview with ABC7 . Francisco Sanchez, who authorities said had been deported to his native Mexico five times and had seven prior felony convictions, claimed he found the gun wrapped in a t-shirt and that it accidentally went off when he picked it up. Sanchez said he wasn't aware a bullet fatally hit Kate Steinle, who was struck in the chest while posing for a photo. Sanchez said he returned to the U.S. for work and knew San Francisco was a sanctuary city, or a place that allows certain protections for immigrants in the country illegally. Donald Trump, who's running for president, tweeted about the shooting as an example of why the U.S. needs to crack down on border control.
