Hard Drinking

Meet Pakistan’s Bootleggers

Since Pakistan outlawed the consumption of alcohol in the 1970s, the livelihood of the country's bootleggers in rural regions has become an increasingly dangerous occupation. Today, they risk police, the murderous Taliban, and families, who condemn them. In rural areas and those controlled by fundamentalists, whippings and hangings have been meted out to suspected bootleggers. Still, others persevere, hoping to make a fortune off government officials' and local landlords' taste for Johnnie Walker Black Label.
