John McCain’s campaign architect, Steve Schmidt, may have spent last fall shamelessly pandering to the Republican base. Now that the campaign’s over, he’s making a bold stand: Speaking today to the Log Cabin Republicans, Schmidt plans to urge the GOP to drop its opposition to gay marriage. "There is a sound conservative argument to be made for same-sex marriage," Schmidt will say in his speech. "I believe conservatives, more than liberals, insist that rights come with responsibilities. No other exercise of one's liberty comes with greater responsibilities than marriage."
