Mayoral Candidate Stabbed, Wins Election

A German politician was elected mayor of Cologne just a day after she was stabbed in the neck while campaigning in the city. Independent candidate Henriette Reker, supported by German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU party, won 52 .7 percent of the vote, officials said Sunday. Reker remains in serious but stable condition at the hospital. Prosecutors said the suspected attacker is a 44-year-old German who was angry about the country’s immigration policy amid Europe’s growing migrant crisis. Reker had been in charge of helping migrants find accommodations in Cologne. The suspect, who authorities declined to name, was charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm, police said. The suspect had no police record and reportedly acted alone, officials added.
