Maldives Leader Escapes Speedboat Blast

Maldives President Yameen Abdul Gayoom escaped an explosion aboard his speedboat on his return home from the hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. The 56-year-old, who came to power in a contested election in 2013, wasn’t hurt in the blast. His wife, Fathimath Ibrahim, and a bodyguard suffered minor injuries. The explosion happened as the boat approached the main jetty of the Indian Ocean archipelago’s capital, Malé. The cause of blast, which is thought to have occurred in the engine room of the boat, was not immediately clear, according to a minister at the president’s office.
