Maduro Faces Largest Protests Against His Rule in Venezuela

Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro faced massive anti-government protests Saturday, as opposition leader Juan Guiadó continued to gain popular and institutional support. The Washington Post estimates that “possibly hundreds of thousands” of protesters took to the streets on Saturday, decrying Maduro’s regime for causing hyperinflation and food shortages. Meanwhile, acting Venezuelan air force general Francisco Yanez became the first high-profile military figure to denounce Maduro, claiming in a video that “90 percent of the armed forces are not with the dictator,” and that “The transition to democracy is imminent.”
