Lifeguard: Natalie Wood Could Have Been Saved

The lifeguard who pulled Natalie Wood’s lifeless body from the water 30 years ago said Tuesday that he believed the actress could have been saved—if officials had begun the search for her earlier. Roger Smith, who is the former county supervising rescue-boat captain, said he hoped the recently reopened investigation into Wood’s death would reveal why lifeguards were not alerted faster that Wood was missing. Smith said that based on the condition her body was found in, he believes “she survived for some time in the water and was blown out to sea … She probably cried for help for hours.”
