A Democratic National Committee staffer suggested using Sen. Bernie Sanders' faith as a talking point against him, leaked DNC emails reveal. In a May 5 email, DNC staffer Brad Marshall asked whether the DNC could "get someone to ask his belief. Does he believe in a God. He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist."
Though Sanders is not explicitly named in the email, he was the only Jewish candidate in contention for the presidency at the time. The DNC is supposed to remain neutral, not favoring one Democratic candidate over another. "This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist," Marshall's email reads.
