It seems they didn’t have a lot to talk about, but the fact that they met at all is remarkable. A representative from a Wyoming chapter of the NAACP and a Ku Klux Klan organizer met in secret over the weekend, and the meeting ended with the Klan member filling out an application. John Abarr, the Klan organizer, said he applied so he could get insight into the NAACP’s views—though he said he still wouldn’t have NAACP rep Jimmy Simmons as a member because the Klan is for white people. Simmons said he called the meeting to discuss race relations. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks white supremacist groups, says it’s the first meeting of its kind but also criticized the meeting on the grounds that it gave legitimacy to the KKK.
