Judge Won’t Divorce Couple Over Gay-Marriage Ruling

A Tennessee judge has declined a couple’s request to divorce because he said the Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing gay marriage, in his words, leaves individuals “incompetent to define and address such keystone/central institutions such as marriage, and, thereby, at minimum, contested divorces.” Hamilton County Chancellor Jeffrey Atherton said the high court must decide “when a marriage is no longer a marriage,” after hearing four days of testimony and examining 77 exhibits in the case of Pamela and Thomas Bumgardner.
