Thar she doesn’t blow, at least for now. Japan has announced that it will suspend an annual Antarctic whale hunt after activists chased and blocked a whaling fleet’s mother ship. Environmentalists and several nations have long objected to Japanese whaling, which was officially banned in 1986 but is allowed under an exemption for science. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society says it has positioned its boat to prevent the fleet from loading any harpooned whales on board. It’s not clear whether the whalers might try again later in the season.
