An ex-soldier has confessed to the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée in Slovakia last year, according to the BBC. Miroslav Marcek, who is in custody with three others for the brutal murder, has confessed shooting the couple, according to local media reports. Kuciak and Martina Kusnirova, both aged 27, were fatally shot in February 2017 after Kuciak uncovered corruption tied to the Italian ’Ndrangheta organized crime syndicate. Marian Kocner, a Slovak businessman, has been separately charged with ordering the murder. Protests after the murders led to the resignation of Slovakia’s prime minister Robert Fico last year.
