James Franco says he’s not gay—and that he’d publicly say so if he was—in an interview with The Advocate. Franco has starred in several gay roles, including his upcoming portrayal of Allen Ginsberg in the biopic Howl. “Everyone thinks I’m a stoner, and some people think I’m gay because I’ve played these gay roles,” Franco says. “That’s what people think, but it’s not true. I don’t smoke pot. I’m not gay.” The actor finds gay roles more challenging, since they haven’t been portrayed very often on the big screen. Straight love stories are “so done,” Franco says.
