Israel Plans 1,000 New Settler Homes

Israel announced plans to build some 1,000 new housing units in areas of Jerusalem claimed by Palestinians as part of a future state, a move expected to further stoke tenisons in the city after months of violence. An official in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the premier wants to push new development in the Jewish neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo in northern Jerusalem and near the Jewish neighborhood of Har Homa in the south. The districts are considered settlements by the international community because they are built in areas the Israeli army captured during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The planned project is the second large-scale development in contested parts of Jerusalem since late September, when Israel advanced plans for about 2,600 homes in the city.
