Former election candidates are being hunted down and executed in public squares in Iraq by ISIS militants who view the candidates’ positions as tantamount to supporting the Baghdad government, according to a senior security official who spoke to NBC News. Two women were shot in the head this week after running for office earlier this year. Five other candidates, all men, were detained by the Islamist group in September. Three were executed; the fate of the other two is unknown. Another former female candidate was also killed in Mosul on Sept. 7.
