ISIS Blows Up Palmyra Arch of Triumph

ISIS militants have reportedly blown up a 2,000 year old monument in Syria's ancient city of Palmyra, the war-torn nation's antiquities chief said on Sunday. Sources in Palmyra confirmed that the Arch of Triumph, which is considered one of the most important parts of the ruins at the UNESCO World Heritage site, has been destroyed, Maamoun Abdulkarim told Reuters. ISIS militants have destroyed two ancient temples at the central Syria site in recent months, after capturing Palmyra from government forces in May. Palmyra has been described as one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world and as the crossroads of several civilizations, according to UNESCO.
