Is India Heading Toward Arab Spring?

A spontaneous wave of uprisings in India, sparked by the arrest on Tuesday of 74-year-old social activist Anna Hazare in New Delhi, has some wondering if the world’s biggest democracy could be headed for a political shake-up. While few expect a chaotic overthrow such as that in Egypt, citizens have banded together to protest a government plagued with corruption charges, miles of red tape, and insufficient services. While a democracy, India has been governed by the same dynasty since independence in 1947, and opposition parties traditionally garner little support. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has blasted the activist's hunger strike as purely "undemocratic." Hazare will be released Thursday, and then will start his hunger strike.
