Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died Sunday in a 15-car crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He was 33. Wheldon’s vehicle launched over another and smashed into a wall when taking a turn at the Indy 300. The crash was marked by fire and smoke, and many of the other drivers said it was the worst they had ever seen. In practice runs, cars tend to reach speeds of 225 mph on the track. The accident also left three other drivers, including the popular Will Power, injured. In the aftermath of the crash, debris covered long stretches of the 1.5 mile oval. "It was like a movie scene which they try to make as gnarly as possible," said Danica Patrick. Wheldon wrote this piece for USA Today yesterday, talking about how “this is going to be an amazing show.”
