Indian Court Ends Ban on Offensive Posts

India’s supreme court on Tuesday struck down a law allowing for a three-year sentence for “grossly offensive,” “menacing,” or “false” posts on the Internet, following widespread fears that it was overly broad and would be misused by police offers hoping to gain favor with elected officials. In its ruling, the court cited fear of a “chilling effect” on free speech because “virtually any opinion on any subject would be covered by it.”
