IKEA to Pay $50 Million in Wrongful Death Settlement

Furniture giant IKEA will pay $50 million in a wrongful death settlement after some of its dressers fell on top of three young boys, killing them. The settlement amount is believed to be one of the largest ever in such a case. The victims included Curren Collas, a toddler at the time of his death in 2014, and two boys who were about to turn two years old, Theodore McGee and Camden Ellis. IKEA argued that the families were at fault for the toppled dressers for not supporting them onto the wall in their homes, but the families said IKEA was at fault because it knew of the potential for the dressers to collapse. The families will be paid $50 million in total, and IKEA said it would donate $150,000 to children’s hospitals.
