How WikiLeaks Helped a Dictator

Not all governments stand to suffer from the WikiLeaks dump—Zimbabwe’s strongman Robert Mugabe, for example, could use information gleaned from the leaks to tighten his grip on power. The cables showed Mugabe’s main opponent—and partner in a fragile coalition government—Morgan Tsvangirai telling Western diplomats that sanctions on Zimbabwe have been important in forcing concessions from Mugabe. Now, Mugabe has ordered his attorney general to investigate Tsvangirai for treason, which could carry the death penalty.
