Houston Police Fear Dramatic Rise in Death Toll

Officials in Houston acknowledge that they’ve had little time to search for potential victims in the midst of overwhelming numbers of rescue calls and voiced fear Monday that the death toll could rise dramatically when they finally begin to check the inundated buildings. “We know in these kind of events that, sadly, the death toll goes up historically,” Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo told the Associated Press, just days after Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane. “I’m really worried about how many bodies we’re going to find.” Houston is a sprawling metropolitan center and the fourth-largest city in the country.
