Hollywood’s New Power Brothers

Could Harvey and Bob Weinstein see their once-proud studio Miramax fall into the hands of their rivals? The Wrap reports that brothers Tom and Alec Gores are close to buying the studio and that the pair has “led lives at least as dramatic as the Weinsteins, and their ambitions in the entertainment industry may be just as grand.” The brothers have a history of turning around struggling companies, turning around the Learning Company in just 75 days after they bought it from Mattel in 2001. They were born as Christians in Israel and immigrated as children to Flint, Michigan. Eventually they made billions in private equity. Apparently, they don’t always get along so well: Alec once hired Hollywood private eye Anthony Pellicano to investigate whether Tom was sleeping with his wife.
