Historian: Harper Lee Is Mentally Sound

A historian who visits Harper Lee once a month, and last saw her on Monday, told The Wall Street Journal that the author of To Kill a Mockingbird is “perfectly able to offer informed consent about her legal matters.” HarperCollins is set to publish Go Set a Watchman, the book Lee wrote before To Kill a Mockingbird featuring Scout as an adult woman, this July. A “lifelong friend” of Lee’s also told the newspaper that Lee remains intellectually sharp and that both Lee and her sister, Alice, trusted lawyer Tonja Carter, who turned the manuscript over to the publisher. “I trust their judgment in picking her,” the friend said.
