Hiker Killed in Ice Cave Collapse

Authorities said one person was killed and four others injured after ice caves on a Washington state mountainside partly collapsed Monday for the second consecutive day. Snohomish County spokeswoman Shari Ireton said officials were unable to recover the body due to the “fragile nature of the ice” at the Big Four Ice Caves at Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Ireton declined to say whether the person killed was male or female, but added three adults were airlifted with serious injuries. Two males were being treated for head lacerations and leg and pelvis fractures, according to a hospital spokesman in Seattle. A female patient was also being treated. Authorities have warned of a potential collapse as the state faces a record heat wave.
