Gunman Spared Student to Deliver Message

The gunman who opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Oregon on Thursday intentionally spared a student’s life in order to have something delivered to the police. Bonnie Schann, the mother of 16-year-old Cheyeanne Fitzgerald, said she was told by her daughter that Chris Harper Mercer gave someone an envelope and told them to stand in the corner of the classroom. Authorities have not disclosed whether they have an envelope or package from him but said several pages of a manifesto were recovered.
