Great Barrier Reef Outlook ‘Poor’

A new forecast is out from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, and the outlook for the popular natural wonder is “poor… and expected to further deteriorate.” The reef, which is the world’s largest coral structure and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has seen its water quality damaged from land-based run-off, coastal development, and challenges from commercial fishing. The report also warned against the proposed expansion of a nearby coal port that would involve dumping sediment in the marine park. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has backed the expansion despite protests.
