GOP leaders have been busy with their red pens, and the results are in. House Republican budget officials have proposed $74 billion in reductions from President Obama’s suggested budget. Their list would make deep cuts in high-speed rail funding, the Environmental Protection Agency, and aid for impoverished women and children. While their list will likely elicit howls of pain from Democrats, it might not please all Republicans either. The conservative Republican Study Group proposed far steeper cuts, and activists are worried that GOP leaders might not follow through on a pledge to cut the federal budget by $100 billion.
