Giffords’ ‘Hero Intern’ to Throw First Pitch

Let’s see if Daniel Hernandez’s pitching is as good as his spirit. The 21-year-old “hero intern” will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Major League Baseball's All-Star Game in Phoenix on Tuesday night. Hernandez is credited with saving the life of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) after she was shot in the head on Jan. 8 in an attack that killed six and wounded an additional 12. Hernandez, a junior at the University of Arizona, was hired less than a week before the shooting. He rushed to Giffords’ side and held her upright so she could breathe and applied pressure to her wound. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig has invited the families of all the victims to participate in Tuesday’s pregame ceremony. One of the victims, 9-year-old Christina Taylor-Green, was the daughter of Los Angeles Dodgers scout John Green and the granddaughter of former Phillies, Mets and Yankees Manager Dallas Green.
