France’s Chief Rabbi Resigns in Disgrace

France’s chief rabbi stepped down from his post Thursday, after coming clean that he does not in fact have a degree in philosophy, nor is he the author of some essays for which he’d received international praise. In a statement written, for some reason, in the third person, Rabbi Gilles Bernheim said of himself, “He is praying that people will listen to his request for forgiveness.” The Central Consistory, which sounds kind of like the Vatican for French Jews, said it hopes to elect a new chief rabbi in the next few months. “We must turn the page,” said the head of the consistory.
