Fran Crippen Dies in Swimming Race

America lost one of its most talented swimmers on Saturday when Francis "Fran" Crippen, who took home a bronze medal in the 2009 world championships in Rome, died while competing in a race in the United Arab Emirates. “With immense sadness, FINA mourns the loss of open water swimmer Fran Crippen during the last leg of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup,” the swimmers’ governing body announced Saturday. The cause of death remains under investigation.
