Four Killed, Dozens Injured in Honduras Soccer Stadium Stampede

At least four people were killed in the capital of Honduras on Sunday when hundreds of soccer fans tried to storm into a stadium. At least 25 people suffered injuries in the fracas, including children and one pregnant woman who subsequently miscarried, authorities said. The stadium, which holds 30,000 people, was reportedly already full when crowds tried to force their way in, prompting police to fire tear gas and water cannons to keep people out. The victims of the stampede died of multiple broken bones and suffocation after being trampled, the Associated Press reported, citing a spokesman for a local hospital. Although the champion match between teams Motagua and Honduras Progreso proceeded despite the tragedy, with Motagua winning the game, the club’s president struck a somber tone in his comments after the victory. “There is nothing to celebrate with what happened outside the stadium,” club president Eduardo Atala wrote on Twitter.
