Feds Won’t Deport Ravi

Dharun Ravi, the 20-year-old former Rutgers student convicted of hate crimes in March for spying on his gay roommate with a webcam, will not be deported after his prison release on Tuesday. “Based on a review of Mr. Ravi’s criminal record, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is not initiatiating removal proceedings at this time,” an ICE spokesman confirmed in a statement on Monday. Though Ravi was born in India and holds citizenship there, he moved to the U.S. with his parents at the age of 5 and is considered a permanent resident of this country. Ravi was sentenced to 30 days for using a webcam to spy on his roommate, Tyler Clementi, in the midst of a sexual encounter with another man. Clementi subsequently committed suicide, but Ravi was found not guilty of causing Clementi’s death. A warden lowered Ravi’s prison sentence to 20 days for good behavior.
