‘F*ck You, Old Man!’: ‘Daily Show’s’ Trevor Noah Hits ‘Bernie or Bust’ for Turning on Sanders
From Philadelphia Tuesday night, Trevor Noah and ‘The Daily Show’ confronted the ‘Bernie or Bust’ crowd head-on.
After a week in Cleveland, The Daily Show descended on Philadelphia this week and Trevor Noah began Tuesday night’s coverage with a look at the rift threatening to tear the Democratic Party apart when unity is needed more than ever to defeat Donald Trump.
As Noah put it, the Democrats began to repair the damage from the damning DNC email hack by politely asking chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to “step the fuck out of here, but the damage was already done.” Only Bernie Sanders could calm down his angry supporters, or so the host thought.
“You've got to love Bernie Sanders,” Noah said after showing video of the senator getting booed by his own supporters for backing Hillary Clinton. “He spent the last year teaching people to dream the impossible dream — universal health care, trillions in infrastructure, free college, all paid for with historic tax hikes. And now in a room full of the people who love those ideas he's coming out like a disillusioned Peter Pan.”
“Clap all you want. Tinker Bell is not coming back. This is real life,” Noah said in his Sanders impression. While his fans vowed to follow him “anywhere,” as soon as Sanders said, "I think we should vote for Hillary,” they countered with, “Fuck you, old man!”
The Daily Show sent correspondents into the “Bernie or Bust” protests outside the DNC to ask if they agree with Sanders that they should do everything they can to stop Donald Trump. But across the board, that did not include voting for Clinton.
Noah ended the segment by telling those who spent night one of the convention booing anything and everything that they need to reexamine their priorities. “You can't give the same boo to Hillary as you do to the discrimination of gay people, it’s not the same thing,” he said.
“Just like that, Bernie's 2016 run was over,” Noah concluded. “And it really was a bittersweet moment for everyone involved, especially for the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, some of whom were actually in tears as Bernie delivered his swan song. There were so many white women crying, I thought Pinterest had died.”
