Evan Lysacek pulled off the upset of the night, by snagging the gold medal and ousting defending champion Evgeni Plushenko. Though the Russian emerged from retirement to try and add a second gold to his collection, Lysacek eked by with a final score of 257.67, 1.31 points ahead of Plushenko. At the end of his program, Plushenko "held up both index fingers... as if to say, 'Was there every any question?'" He apparently gestured too soon. Lyscek is the first American man to win the coveted Olympic gold since Brian Boitano in 1988.
