An enormous explosion hit Tianjin, China, before midnight Thursday, killing at least 13 people according to the police. More than 300 people have been taken to the hospital and some 400 residents have signed up to donate blood. Tianjin, located in northern China, is home to more than 15 million people and is 90 miles east of Beijing. State media said the explosion happened at a facility storing unspecified hazardous goods. Russell Dengel, a space science and engineering researcher at the University of Wisconsin, says the explosion's heat could be detected from space.
