English Artist Exhibits in German Pavilion

Britain’s Liam Gillick is showing in the German pavilion at the Biennale but isn’t too impressed by the political implications of that fact. “I never think that national pavilions are that interesting, frankly,” he says in an extensive interview in Art in America magazine. But Gillick, who is based in New York, is excited to be a part of the artistic community in Italy. “We’ve rented apartments in Venice, and amongst us we’ll create our own kind of semi-commune, where ideas can be generated and can be executed quite fast,” he said. Gillick is perhaps best known for his minimalist, bookshelf-like sculptures of aluminum and plexiglass.
